A Year with the GA645zi

I walked into Shot on Film in late 2023 looking to find something that would quench my medium format thirst. I’d seen a video on YouTube about some magical point and shoot that shot in 6X4.5, had auto-focus, and looked like something out of a kid’s toy section. And it was made by Fuji.

I am not sure what I wanted this camera to extract from me, but I knew I wanted a piece of hardware with decent glass and a larger negative to allow me the flexibility to find some casual fun with photography. This thing hasn’t disappointed. There was a big learning curve in the beginning but I’ve found some rhythm, especially as a secondary body to capture some more magical scenes I come across. If anything, this camera, with it’s very antiquated auto-focus system (although very capable), desire to be so loud that it could awaken a city block, and it’s clunkiness, I’ve fallen head over heels with some of the photographs I’ve been able to take. Below is a sample of this year’s images with the GA645zi. In my opinion, it’s one of Fujifilm’s crown jewels.
